VISUAL & ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT GUIDELINES

Functional design is sustainable, aesthetic is art. This is our belief and the root of our design philosophy. At Hillery Priest Architecture we aim to combine the sustainable with the beautiful and, working with this premise in mind, hope to create an architecture that will fit naturally into our landscape and our culture. Through intelligent design we can lessen the impact we have on our environment.

Firstly we look closely at what the site offers, focusing on the existing features, climatic variations and orientation and allow this to shape our thoughts towards the design of the building.  Secondly, in placing the concept of the house within the site it makes sense to maximise the features and resources that have been identified and to begin planning the surrounds that will assist with the buildings further integration into the environment. Now the house has been sited and the natural resources identified, we can begin to translate these elements into the varying components, like warmth, light, fresh air, that constitute a comfortable home.

The third aspect requires that we look in detail at the various products and building processes that reinforce the sustainable concept. This integrates our knowledge about materials longevity and energy consumption, it also requires a glance at specific energy efficient appliances and the long term building maintenance and usage.

Finally if the client wishes to live in a fully independent house we can advise on the concepts of full sustainability and who to use for specific design.

With our focus firmly on creating buildings of beauty, we can realise our hopes and deliver architecture that will retrospectively be looked upon as pioneering in the new age of ecology.

“integration of the landscape as part of the raw material of architecture and the expressive translation of nature’s fluid forms into the language of building”
